Carmen Guerra

Dr. Carmen Guerra is the Ruth C. and Raymond G. Perelman Professor of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Guerra is a general internist and cancer equity researcher. She is also the Vice Chair of Diversity and Inclusion for the Department of Medicine and the Associate Director of Diversity and Outreach for the Abramson Cancer Center.

Dr. Guerra’s research is focused on developing and evaluating interventions to increase the participation of under-resourced populations in cancer screenings and cancer clinical trials. Dr. Guerra is member of the American Cancer Society (ACS) National Board of Directors and is currently the U.S. Deputy Chair for the Health Equity Workgroup of the international Multicancer Early Detection Test Consortium. She has authored the current American Cancer Society’s colorectal, cervical and HPV clinical practice guidelines. She co-chaired two national American Society of Clinical Oncology-Association of Community Cancer Centers (ASCO-ACCC) workgroups that developed the ASCO-ACCC joint research statement “Increasing Racial and Ethnic Diversity in Cancer Clinical Trials” and released the ASCO-ACCC “Just AskTM” unconscious bias training and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Research Site Self-Assessment for cancer research teams. For her work, Dr. Guerra has received 2017 St. George Medal from the ACS and the 2022 Research Award from the ACCC. For her contributions to Penn Medicine, she is also the recipient of the Dr. C William Hanson II Award, the Elizabeth Kirk Rose, M’26 Women in Medicine Award and the Van Dusen Professionalism Award.
